Meltdown?  Try Hollywood tears down
the USA.  Again!

Did we need another Hollywood picture making the USA the enemy in THIS day and age?  Especially in an era when we have irrefutable evidence that there are groups that want to see us destroyed and that have already attacked us on our own soil?  Well, that is what we got with the FX cable channel's broadcast of the Sunday night movie extravaganza, "Meltdown" (06/06/2004).

Premise:  Terrorists take over the San Juan nuclear power plant situated off the coast of California near San Francisco.  They claim allegiance to Al Qaeda and say they are going to blow up the plant causing Chernobyl like destruction over much of California.  We see the U.S. government response to this threat and their attempts to assure the public that the situation is in hand and their attempts to capture these terrorists before they cause a catastrophe.

Naturally, about half way through the movie we discover the story centers around the typical Hollywood-hates-America plot.  It turns out that they are not REALLY terrorists, after all.  Nope.  They are disgruntled American Special Forces soldiers who want to teach the evil U.S. government a lesson.  Of course these poor, poor soldiers have also all gotten cancer from depleted uranium shell casings that they were forced to handle in their duties in Afghanistan.  Yep, they are just spittin mad at 'ol Uncle Sam.

We were also treated to the assumption that the citizens in all major U.S. cities would suddenly erupt in riots because one California city is under threat of a nuclear power plant meltdown.  Wouldn't you, if you lived in Boston, burn down your local convenience store to get a few extra gallons of water because a city in California was under a terrorist threat?  Huh?  Of course when New York City was actually, viscously attacked on 09/11/2001 the rest of the country sat glued to their TV sets instead of going about their hometowns on a rampage.  For that matter few even in New York City itself did anything other than band together in brotherhood and concern.  Perhaps Americans AREN'T that primal and stupid?

Later, after we discover that it is disgruntled U.S. troops doing the dirty deed, we get to see the U.S. government officials in the Homeland Security Department setting a policy that they will hide the facts of the case from the public.  Uh, huh.  That's right, we can't expect the government to ever really tell us what is going on, can we?  After all MOST of what is going on is THEIR fault in the first place, right?  Hollywood rule number one, the U.S. government is the most evil one ever created by the dark forces of man's evil, evil mind!

Lastly, when the U.S. forces finally kill all the disgruntled soldiers and get to the power plant control room they also kill the plant control operator who is trying to help shut down the threat because he is from Pakistan and "looks" like a terrorist.  So, naturally, the U.S. armed forces are racists, too.  And they are too stupid to tell the difference between a guy wearing power plant ID cards on a white lab coat from heavily armed and militia-like, uniform clad bad guys to boot.  What the heck, eh?  Our boys just shoot 'em all even in their own country anyway, right?  We all know that U.S. soldiers are automatons who just pull triggers and they are not allowed to think, right?  Of course!  Don't be silly.

Of course this flies in the face of reality.  There ARE real terrorists out there.  They HAVE killed Americans all across the globe.  They continue to issue proclamations that they intend to bring more harm to America.  They are infesting every Western nation and causing problems for them there as well.  So why did the FX channel feel it necessary to make the enemy our own government?  Why did the "terrorists" have to end up being our own boys?  Because in Hollywood's mind, the U.S. government could absolutely never BE the hero.  The USA just could never be the "good guys" and be a force for good in the world to them.  We HAVE to be perpetrators of evil, purveyors of sin.  It is axiomatic to them that the USA is the enemy, its citizens are stupid and dangerous and its armed forces are either dupes or crazies.

Hollywood is a far cry from the days of WWII when it came together to help defeat our enemies.  They have drifted far afield from the days when a John Wayne or a Henry Fonda could come to battle with might, justification and God on their side.  They have abandoned even a neutral position on America and have firmly decided we are the enemy that must be destroyed.

Hollywood is a tool for Osama Bin Laden and his ilk.  Now, Hollywood celebrates sophists like Michael Moore or Al Franken who would rather see the USA defeated and who do all they can to effect such an outcome.

So, I almost turned this piece of garbage off the second that it became clear that this FX movie was making the USA out to be the bad guy, once again.  I did not, however, so that I would be able to write this warning and be able to say yes, I DID see this movie and it is CRAP!
